With an operator in place and grant money tapped, construction on the long-planned $25 million “transloading” facility on Des Moines' east side could begin as early as the first quarter of 2020, reports the Des Moines Register.
The transloading center, or railport, is a transfer site for bulk materials, where they're moved from semi-trailers to railcars, or vice-versa.
Des Moines Industrial, which took over as the facility operator after its predecessor left the project, hopes to break ground on 40-acre project as soon as the weather cooperates next year.
According to a 2018 study from the University of Northern Iowa, the transloading facility could have an annual economic impact of $4.8 million.
