Surge in wheat and soybean exports, drop in corn sales to Asia

Soybean export sales rise, primarily driven by demand from China and Egypt.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS) released its summary of export transactions for the week ending June 13, 2024. Key highlights include:

Wheat:

  • Net Sales: 589,700 metric tons (MT) for 2024/2025, primarily to South Korea (118,600 MT), the Philippines (108,300 MT), Vietnam (88,400 MT), Indonesia (80,200 MT), and Brazil (60,000 MT). Reductions were noted for unknown destinations (37,000 MT), Peru (1,000 MT), and El Salvador (800 MT).
  • Exports: 363,600 MT, mainly to South Korea (91,400 MT), Thailand (56,200 MT), Panama (52,400 MT), the Philippines (48,300 MT), and Vietnam (26,400 MT).

Corn:

  • Net Sales: 511,400 MT for 2023/2024, a decrease of 52% from the previous week. Major buyers included Japan (370,600 MT), Colombia (113,900 MT), Mexico (99,700 MT), Panama (97,000 MT), and Saudi Arabia (59,700 MT). Reductions for unknown destinations (418,400 MT) impacted overall sales.
  • Exports: 1,481,700 MT, up 19% from the previous week, with primary destinations being Japan (526,100 MT), Mexico (346,200 MT), Spain (107,900 MT), Colombia (97,200 MT), and Saudi Arabia (59,700 MT).

Barley:

  • Exports: 400 MT to Japan. No new net sales reported.

Sorghum:

  • Net Sales: 55,100 MT for 2023/2024, a decrease of 54% from the previous week. All sales were to China.
  • Exports: 900 MT to China, down 99% from the prior 4-week average.

Rice:

  • Net Sales: 85,600 MT for 2023/2024, an increase of 38% from the previous week. Key buyers were Mexico (43,700 MT), Colombia (14,500 MT), Haiti (14,500 MT), Saudi Arabia (8,700 MT), and Canada (3,500 MT).
  • Exports: 43,000 MT, primarily to Mexico (28,400 MT), Saudi Arabia (9,400 MT), Canada (2,200 MT), Israel (900 MT), and Japan (900 MT).

Soybeans:

  • Net Sales: 556,500 MT for 2023/2024, up 48% from the previous week. Main destinations included China (213,700 MT), Egypt (157,500 MT), Indonesia (64,600 MT), the Netherlands (58,300 MT), and unknown destinations (48,700 MT).
  • Exports: 341,000 MT, up 58% from the previous week, with major shipments to Indonesia (78,900 MT), the Netherlands (58,300 MT), Egypt (52,500 MT), Algeria (43,800 MT), and Mexico (32,600 MT).

Soybean Cake and Meal:

  • Net Sales: 178,800 MT for 2023/2024, up 25% from the previous week. Major buyers were Vietnam (50,000 MT), Panama (38,600 MT), Guatemala (34,600 MT), Mexico (22,400 MT), and Colombia (22,200 MT).
  • Exports: 206,100 MT, primarily to Vietnam (50,000 MT), Mexico (32,700 MT), Ecuador (32,300 MT), Canada (26,800 MT), and Colombia (12,200 MT).

Soybean Oil:

  • Net Sales: 20,900 MT for 2023/2024, up 43% from the previous week. Main buyers were Mexico (16,500 MT) and Venezuela (5,000 MT).
  • Exports: 1,500 MT to Canada (800 MT) and Mexico (700 MT).

Cotton:

  • Net Sales: Upland cotton sales of 189,000 running bales (RB) for 2023/2024, up 7% from the previous week. Major buyers were China (82,200 RB), Vietnam (38,600 RB), Pakistan (33,800 RB), India (7,300 RB), and Taiwan (4,900 RB).
  • Exports: 197,900 RB, primarily to China (78,000 RB), Vietnam (23,800 RB), Turkey (21,500 RB), Pakistan (13,400 RB), and Indonesia (11,400 RB).

Beef:

  • Net Sales: 14,900 MT for 2024, up 24% from the previous week. Major destinations were South Korea (4,700 MT), Japan (3,800 MT), Mexico (2,100 MT), Canada (1,300 MT), and Taiwan (1,000 MT).
  • Exports: 16,800 MT, primarily to South Korea (4,300 MT), Japan (3,700 MT), China (1,900 MT), Mexico (1,800 MT), and Taiwan (1,700 MT).

Pork:

  • Net Sales: 21,400 MT for 2024, down 29% from the previous week. Key buyers included Mexico (7,400 MT), Japan (5,800 MT), the Dominican Republic (2,500 MT), Colombia (1,700 MT), and Canada (1,200 MT).
  • Exports: 29,000 MT, primarily to Mexico (11,600 MT), Japan (4,800 MT), South Korea (3,200 MT), China (2,400 MT), and Canada (2,100 MT).
