USDA reports robust agricultural export transactions in late May

Key highlights include a notable increase in corn sales, which surged by 46% from the previous week.

The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service released its report of export transactions for the week ending May 30, 2024. Here are the highlights:

Wheat: Net sales reductions of 229,000 metric tons (MT) for 2023/2024 were primarily due to decreases in sales to Mexico (72,200 MT), unknown destinations (64,600 MT), the Philippines (54,400 MT), South Korea (33,100 MT), and Taiwan (25,800 MT). For 2024/2025, net sales totaled 616,900 MT, mainly to unknown destinations (136,600 MT), Taiwan (123,900 MT), the Philippines (115,000 MT), Mexico (101,000 MT), and China (60,500 MT). Wheat exports totaled 449,800 MT, primarily to Mexico, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

Corn: Net sales of 1,180,900 MT for 2023/2024 increased by 46% from the previous week and 41% from the prior 4-week average. Major buyers included Mexico (380,200 MT), Japan (307,300 MT), Spain (271,800 MT), China (136,200 MT), and Colombia (75,700 MT). Exports totaled 1,488,600 MT, primarily to Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia, China, and Colombia.

Barley: Net sales reductions of 200 MT for 2023/2024 were reported for South Korea, with no exports for the week.

Sorghum: Net sales of 56,100 MT for 2023/2024 decreased by 9% from the previous week but were up 61% from the prior 4-week average. Exports of 68,000 MT, primarily to China, increased by 42% from the previous week.

Rice: Net sales of 33,500 MT for 2023/2024 were down 68% from the previous week. Main buyers included Haiti, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Saudi Arabia, and Canada. Exports of 42,400 MT were down 25%, primarily to Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Canada, and Mexico.

Soybeans: Net sales of 189,600 MT for 2023/2024 fell by 43% from the previous week. Key buyers were the Netherlands, Egypt, Mexico, Indonesia, and Colombia. Exports of 387,900 MT were up 86%, mainly to China, Mexico, Turkey, the Netherlands, and Egypt.

Soybean Meal: Net sales of 250,200 MT for 2023/2024 decreased by 6% from the previous week. Major buyers were Colombia, the Philippines, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras. Exports of 231,100 MT went primarily to Mexico, the Philippines, Algeria, Colombia, and Canada.

Soybean Oil: Net sales of 6,000 MT for 2023/2024 were down 42% from the previous week, with Jamaica, Canada, and Mexico as the main buyers. Exports totaled 1,400 MT, primarily to Mexico.

Cotton: Net sales of Upland cotton totaling 138,700 RB for 2023/2024 fell by 38% from the previous week. Major buyers included China, Pakistan, Vietnam, El Salvador, and Bangladesh. Exports of 157,000 RB were primarily to China, Mexico, Turkey, Pakistan, and Vietnam. Net sales of Pima cotton totaled 2,000 RB, with exports of 8,100 RB mainly to India, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Brazil.

Hides and Skins: Net sales of 239,700 pieces for 2024 were down 49% from the previous week. Major buyers included China, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan. Exports of 313,400 pieces were mainly to China, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, and Thailand.

Beef: Net sales of 14,500 MT for 2024 fell by 8% from the previous week. Major buyers were South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Canada, and Taiwan. Exports of 15,300 MT went primarily to Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Canada.

Pork: Net sales of 29,900 MT for 2024 decreased by 33% from the previous week. Main buyers included China, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and Canada. Exports of 34,400 MT were primarily to Mexico, Japan, South Korea, China, and Canada.
