USDA reports mixed movements in agricultural exports

Wheat sales showed a modest increase, while corn sales saw a slight decline compared to previous weeks.

The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service released its summary of export sales for the week of May 31 to June 6, 2024.

Wheat: Net sales for the 2024/2025 marketing year totaled 223,900 metric tons (MT), primarily for Mexico (79,600 MT), the Philippines (54,900 MT), the Dominican Republic (43,700 MT), Japan (32,100 MT), and Brazil (30,000 MT). Reductions were reported for unknown destinations (84,600 MT), Barbados (1,100 MT), and Taiwan (200 MT). An additional 115,300 MT in sales were carried over from the 2023/2024 marketing year. Exports for the period ending May 31 were 7,400 MT, with total exports for the year reaching 18,529,700 MT, a 4% increase from the previous year. Primary destinations included the Dominican Republic (5,500 MT) and Canada (1,900 MT). Exports for June 1 totaled 260,500 MT, mainly to the Philippines (74,900 MT), Indonesia (57,100 MT), Mexico (28,900 MT), Nigeria (27,500 MT), and Taiwan (26,200 MT).

Corn: Net sales for 2023/2024 were 1,056,100 MT, down 11% from the previous week but up 16% from the prior 4-week average. Key buyers were Japan (414,100 MT), Colombia (184,500 MT), Mexico (168,000 MT), unknown destinations (99,900 MT), and China (70,900 MT). Reductions were noted for Honduras (30,000 MT), Panama (17,000 MT), and Costa Rica (200 MT). Net sales for 2024/2025 were 69,500 MT. Exports for the week were 1,249,000 MT, down 16% from the previous week. Primary destinations included Mexico (422,800 MT), Japan (262,900 MT), Colombia (103,400 MT), Taiwan (81,200 MT), and China (76,800 MT).

Barley: No net sales were reported for the 2024/2025 marketing year. A total of 5,300 MT in sales were carried over from the 2023/2024 marketing year. Accumulated exports were 6,300 MT, down 39% from the prior year.

Sorghum: Net sales of 118,800 MT for 2023/2024 were significantly up from the previous week. Increases were reported for China (237,800 MT) and Eritrea (33,000 MT), with reductions for unknown destinations (151,000 MT) and Japan (1,000 MT). Exports of 179,800 MT were primarily to China (137,800 MT), Eritrea (33,000 MT), and Japan (9,000 MT).

Rice: Net sales of 62,000 MT for 2023/2024 were up 85% from the previous week. Major buyers included Mexico (49,900 MT), the Dominican Republic (7,000 MT), Canada (1,600 MT), Honduras (1,300 MT), and Albania (1,200 MT). Exports of 89,100 MT were up significantly from the previous week, mainly to Mexico (35,500 MT), Panama (29,100 MT), Honduras (12,900 MT), Jordan (5,500 MT), and Canada (3,100 MT).

Soybeans: Net sales of 377,100 MT for 2023/2024 were up 99% from the previous week. Key buyers included China (109,100 MT), the Netherlands (56,600 MT), Indonesia (50,100 MT), unknown destinations (42,500 MT), and Mexico (33,400 MT). Exports of 215,300 MT were down 45% from the previous week, mainly to the Netherlands (56,600 MT), Mexico (52,000 MT), Indonesia (33,200 MT), Japan (20,900 MT), and Colombia (11,100 MT).

Soybean Cake and Meal: Net sales of 143,300 MT for 2023/2024 were down 43% from the previous week. Major buyers included Mexico (64,300 MT), unknown destinations (23,000 MT), Canada (10,900 MT), Kuwait (7,500 MT), and Taiwan (7,300 MT). Exports of 286,400 MT were up 24% from the previous week, primarily to the Philippines (51,200 MT), Colombia (45,500 MT), Canada (37,400 MT), Saudi Arabia (37,300 MT), and Mexico (29,300 MT).

Soybean Oil: Net sales of 14,600 MT for 2023/2024 were up significantly from the previous week. Increases were for South Korea (12,000 MT), the Dominican Republic (1,000 MT), Mexico (800 MT), and Canada (500 MT). Exports of 2,500 MT were up 76% from the previous week, primarily to Mexico (1,700 MT), Canada (500 MT), and the Dominican Republic (300 MT).

Cotton: Net sales of Upland cotton for 2023/2024 totaled 177,100 RB, up 28% from the previous week. Major buyers included China (77,500 RB), Vietnam (28,900 RB), Pakistan (16,900 RB), Macau (14,800 RB), and Mexico (6,200 RB). Exports of 186,600 RB were up 19% from the previous week, primarily to China (73,400 RB), Turkey (17,700 RB), Vietnam (16,600 RB), Pakistan (14,000 RB), and Bangladesh (11,400 RB). Net sales of Pima cotton for 2023/2024 totaled 3,700 RB. Exports of 9,000 RB were primarily to India (3,100 RB), Pakistan (2,300 RB), China (1,300 RB), Vietnam (900 RB), and Thailand (400 RB).

Hides and Skins: Net sales of 368,000 pieces for 2024 were up 54% from the previous week. Major buyers included China (227,900 pieces), South Korea (43,000 pieces), Mexico (34,200 pieces), Brazil (22,100 pieces), and Indonesia (15,500 pieces). Exports of 427,600 pieces were up 36%, primarily to China (307,600 pieces), South Korea (37,000 pieces), Mexico (29,500 pieces), Thailand (22,500 pieces), and Brazil (20,400 pieces).

Beef: Net sales of 12,000 MT for 2024 were down 17% from the previous week. Major buyers included South Korea (3,300 MT), Japan (3,000 MT), Canada (1,400 MT), China (1,300 MT), and Mexico (800 MT). Exports of 16,600 MT were up 8%, primarily to South Korea (4,100 MT), Japan (4,000 MT), China (2,100 MT), Taiwan (1,800 MT), and Canada (1,500 MT).

Pork: Net sales of 30,100 MT for 2024 were up 1% from the previous week. Major buyers included Mexico (14,000 MT), Japan (4,200 MT), Colombia (2,600 MT), Canada (2,000 MT), and Australia (1,700 MT). Exports of 32,800 MT were down 5%, primarily to Mexico (14,000 MT), Japan (4,400 MT), China (3,500 MT), South Korea (3,300 MT), and Canada (2,100 MT).
