Acreage report shows decrease in corn, increase in soybean plantings

Key findings include a slight increase in biotech varieties for both crops and significant changes in cotton and wheat acreages.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released its Acreage report today, estimating 91.5 million acres of corn planted in the United States for 2024, a 3% decrease from last year. Conversely, soybean planted area is estimated at 86.1 million acres, marking a 3% increase from 2023.

NASS conducted surveys with approximately 9,000 segments of land and nearly 64,000 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to gather detailed information on actual planting activities. Key findings from the Acreage report include:

Corn:

  • Planted area: 91.5 million acres, down 3% from 2023.
  • Biotech varieties: 94% of all corn acres planted in the U.S. are biotech varieties, up from 93% in 2023.
Soybeans:
  • Planted area: 86.1 million acres, up 3% from last year.
  • Herbicide-resistant varieties: 96% of soybean acreage was planted with herbicide-resistant seed varieties, an increase from 95% in 2023.
Cotton:
  • Total planted area: 11.7 million acres, a 14% increase from 2023.
  • Upland cotton: 11.5 million acres, up 14% from last year.
  • American Pima: 182,000 acres, up 24% from 2023.
  • Biotech varieties: 96% of Upland cotton planted acres are biotech varieties, down from 97% last year.
Wheat:
  • Total planted area: 47.2 million acres, a 5% decrease from 2023.
  • Winter wheat: 33.8 million acres, down 8% from last year.
  • Other spring wheat: 11.3 million acres, up 1% from 2023.
  • Durum wheat: 2.17 million acres, up 29% from last year.
Grain stocks:
  • Corn: 4.99 billion bushels, up 22% from last year.
  • On-farm stocks: Up 37% from a year ago.
  • Off-farm stocks: Up 4%.
  • Soybeans: 970 million bushels, up 22% from June 1, 2023.
  • On-farm stocks: Up 44% from a year ago.
  • Off-farm stocks: Up 6%.
  • All wheat: 702 million bushels, up 23% from last year.
  • On-farm stocks: Up 12%.
  • Off-farm stocks: Up 27%.
  • Durum wheat: 21.1 million bushels, down 24% from June 1, 2023.
  • On-farm stocks: Down 22%.
  • Off-farm stocks: Down 26%.
Rice stocks:
  • Rough rice: 2.73 million metric tons, up 37% from June 1, 2023.
  • On-farm stocks: Up 22%.
  • Off-farm stocks: Up 39%.
  • Varieties: Long grain (55%), medium grain (44%), short grain (1%).
  • Milled rice: 218,270 metric tons, down 7% from a year ago.
  • Whole kernel rice: 160,980 metric tons.
  • Second heads, Screenings, and Brewers Rice: 57,290 metric tons.
