Matt Enright reported on a smoldering a fire at Tyson Foods' feed mill in Snow Hill, Maryland, for Lancaster Farming. The fire has been burning since at least May 17. despite efforts to extinguish it continue. Officials assure that the odor of burning corn, while strong, poses no hazard to locals.
The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office (WCFM) and Department of Emergency Services (DES) are closely monitoring the situation along with the Snow Hill Volunteer Fire Department (SHVFC). An independent contractor has confirmed that air quality within Snow Hill remains within normal regulatory limits.
The primary method for fighting this type of contained fire involves using nitrogen to displace oxygen and smother the fire, with fire hoses reserved for any grain that may still be smoldering once removed from the silo.
Snow Hill Town Manager Rick Pollitt expressed confidence in the safety measures being taken. "We have confidence that the emergency is being properly managed and that ongoing testing for air quality and traffic safety is among the highest priorities," Pollitt said.
No injuries have been reported. SHVFC, WCFM, and DES will continue to work with Tyson to keep the community safe and informed.
