Philip, SD, Grain Bin Collapse Averted

CHS Midwest Cooperative's 100,000-bushel bin buckle causes evacuation

The Rapid City Journal's Jim Holland reported on a close call at the CHS Midwest Cooperative Philips, SD, location, that forced surrounding downtown area to evacuate.

Crews at the grain elevator were loading wheat into the nearly full 100,000-bushel grain bin, when they noticed a buckle in its exterior. Fearing a collapse and the potential resulting dust explosion, officials triggered an evacuation of the surrounding downtown area.

Crews at the site were able to perform a controlled emptying of the damaged bin under the direction of a grain engineering expert, and the evacuation order was lifted that afternoon.
