The twin grain elevators in Nanton, Alberta were robbed of a New Years light display used to fundraise for the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre Society.  According to reporting from Tyson Fedor for CTV News Calgary Video Journalist, the cables supplying power to the lights were stolen on December 29, leaving the community disheartened.

The light display on the twin grain elevators holds immense significance for the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre Society. Not only is it a seasonal fundraising initiative, but it also brings joy to countless individuals and serves as a major attraction on social media platforms. The towering elevators, visible from several kilometers away, have become iconic symbols of Nanton, leaving a lasting impression on visitors and commuters alike.

Leo Wieser, the board president for the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre Society, explains, "It's amazing how dark it gets over here in this corner of the highway when the lights aren't on. They are the big icons. You can see them for two kilometers going in and out of the town, so it's a big thing."

The theft of the cables has left the society reeling, both financially and emotionally. Approximately $4,000 to $5,000 worth of cables were stolen, including a 30-meter 240vac cable that was on loan to the centre and nine 15-meter power cables. The Nanton Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to the incident but currently have no suspects.

Mayor Jennifer Handley expresses her disbelief, stating, "I know how much the community and people driving through Nanton have come to appreciate this unique experience. It's just unbelievable and really disheartening." With over 70,000 vehicles passing through the town daily, the light display has become a source of joy for many, offering a brief respite during their journey.
