Lightning strike ignites fire at Fontana, Kansas, grain elevator

Fire resulted in $500,000 worth of damage and the eventual collapse of the structure.

Brian McCauley reported on a lightning strike that ignited a fire that devastated a portion of a Fontana, Kansas, grain elevator for The Miami County Republic. causing significant damage estimated at $500,000. 

The incident called for a rapid response from multiple firefighting teams, including units from Miami County Fire District No. 1 in Fontana, as well as from Osawatomie, Louisburg, and Paola. Upon arrival, firefighters found the grain elevator fully engulfed in flames, and the structure collapsed shortly thereafter. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

The cause of the fire has been officially attributed to a lightning strike during the stormy conditions that morning.
